Fill + Flourish

Interdisciplinary Group Project with Yurika McGuire

Client: KFive Furniture

This research design project explored the use of mycelium in acoustic panel design. Mycelium is a natural fungus that can grow within moulds to create an organic form that is lightweight and sound-absorbing.

Our project asked whether fabric could be used as a mould to achieve unique organic forms, filling a sewn shape with the mycelium to then grow within and become part of this form.

The project resulted in a variety of circular forms that showcased the many colours and textures that this approach could create. It proposed an approach to creating ‘moulds’ for mycelium that harnesses the qualities of synthetic fabrics or use natural fabrics for a truly bio-degradable design.

The fill + flourish work above was part of the Phenomenal Fungi series of pieces designed by students of Monash University. The Phenomenal Fungi works were showcased in an exhibition hosted by KFive Furniture. The exhibition highlighted the use of mycelium as a material and the possible sustainable and aesthetic outcomes of its use.

For the exhibition it was proposed that the circular forms could be hung together to create room-dividing screens or lighting pendants for various contexts.

Our fill + flourish work featured as part of the Phenomenal Fungi body of work which is:

The fill + flourish work was featured as part of the Mycalicoes exhibition at the fortyfive downstairs gallery. The circular forms were hung together and lit from above. This highlighted the different textures and colours each form had as a result of the different textiles and growing times.
